Harnessing the Number 8 Wire Mindset for Custom Software Solutions
Curious about the connection between Number 8 Wire and software? This quintessential New Zealand approach to problem-solving embodies innovation and adaptability, key elements in creating Custom Software Solutions
What does Number 8 Wire have to do with Software you may ask? Well Number 8 wire is the traditional New Zealand way of constructing, fixing and adapting things to work how you want them to. More than that it’s a Kiwi attitude. Businesses across New Zealand have embraced the Number 8 Wire mentality, creatively tailoring their processes to address unique challenges, business processes, or to manage a specific or unique part of the business. This makes them incompatible with “Off The Shelf Software” that needs to fit the mass market with an 80% fit, that big software firms target.
Where’s the Other 20%?
Because most software systems are indeed targeted to this 80% fit, it works for most businesses, but what if you really, really need to also track the 20% that’s not included? Or worse, it might be 40%? Or even 60% if you are one of those Kiwi companies that used the “Number 8 Wire” concept to develop your own totally unique processes.
Exploring Alternatives
There are many solutions adopted. Some continue to use Paper and huge filing cabinets, others use spreadsheets that often duplicate much of the data in the main system, Some use Word or other files stored in a Folder Structure that users must painfully Navigate to update.
Challenges with external tracking systems?
These systems all need to be maintained and managed separately by someone, and frequently kept in “sync”, manually (read as Copy / Paste over and over). This all takes time to cross reference, adjust and enter the data, often in awkward layouts that are unintuitive and make it difficult to locate the details you need.

Clearly a system built specifically for these “Number 8 Wire” processes and Harnessing the Number 8 Wire Mindset for Custom Software Solutions will be more efficient and better at capturing the data while also visually clearer and user friendly. Tech Tip -D.I.Y. PC Hardware Maintenance.
In previous years I usually remind you to Check and test your Backups. This is always important but so is the “Hardware health” of your PC. A little very simple maintenance can help keep your PC running well and even save some power costs on cooling.
- Shutdown your PC and Turn off the Power at the wall, but leave plugged if so the chassis remains earthed.
- Remove the cover -you may need to refer to your Manufactures support page for guidance.
- Be very careful not to loosen or disturb any Cables, RAM Modules or other Components.
- Plug in your Vacuum cleaner, and while holding the Metal Chassis to prevent Static Electricity buildup, carefully suck out all dust from around Vents, Fans, Cooling Fins etc.
- For more stubborn dust, use a small artists paint brush to loosen the dust before sucking it out.
- Check that you have not disturbed anything and replace the cover.
- Consider your PC’s location. More dust is often attracted at Floor-level that on the top of your desk.
- Restart your PC and confirm full functionality.
Overheating caused by dust build up is a key cause of hardware failure. Hopefully you have just avoided this… -Oh and don’t forget to test your Backups also!
Until next time, Happy Holidays,
Brian Henderson and the ProcessIT Team
