30 years of Internet!
Although the milestone pasted last week, and the hype train has left the station, I still can’t help but be in awe of the accomplishments of the internet over the last 30 years of its existence.
From audibly and painfully connecting to the internet over a dial-up modem and getting your social presence known on those good old 1980’s – 1990’s social media platforms like AOL, Yahoo messenger and MSN Messenger.
Or joining the famous Klingon Language Institute for those who enjoyed the Star Trek series.
To present day, being able to view details of all man-made satellites currently in orbit, getting a copy of practically any book ever written, watching live videos of African wildlife or viewing reaction videos of other people watching videos.
And now, simply for the sake of nostalgia, re-experiencing various computer restart processes over the last 30 years or seeing what a webpage used to look like by trying out the Wayback Machine. The internet is more than just web pages. EMail was enabled via the internet how could we ever have coped without EMail? As was basic file sharing – uploading to a “Server” in what would one day become known as “The Cloud!”
We have come a long way in terms of cyber space, and sure, not all of it is for the better. But without the evolution of the internet we would be connected to less people, be less knowledgeable and productivity would slow to a crawl.
